About Calcota

Calcota was born out of a frustrating evening in 2023. Our founder, a software engineer based in Pune, was sitting across from his father trying to explain why switching from the old tax regime to the new one would save him ₹42,000 per year. The problem was not the math — it was that every online calculator either showed outdated tax slabs, required a sign-up to see the full breakdown, or gave a single number without showing the comparison between both regimes side by side.

That night, he built the first version of the Income Tax Calculator on a weekend project. He shared it with colleagues at work. Within two weeks, people he had never met were using it — forwarded through WhatsApp groups of salaried professionals preparing for tax season. The demand was clear: Indian users needed financial calculators that understood Indian financial products, used current rates and rules, and showed their work instead of hiding behind a “Calculate” button.

What We Built and Why

Calcota now offers ten specialized financial calculators covering the tools most commonly needed by Indian salaried professionals, investors, and small business owners. Every calculator is built around Indian financial norms — our EMI Calculator uses the reducing balance method that Indian banks follow, our PPF Calculator knows about the 15-year lock-in and partial withdrawal rules, and our GST Calculator handles all five tax slabs including the special rates for gold and rough diamonds.

We did not build these tools to compete with banking apps or wealth management platforms. Those serve a different purpose. Calcota exists for the moments when you need a quick, trustworthy answer — standing in a bank comparing two home loan offers, discussing SIP options with a friend over chai, or checking your HRA exemption before submitting your investment declaration to HR.

Our Principles

Accuracy over speed: We would rather delay a calculator’s launch by a week than publish one with incorrect formulas. Every tool is cross-verified against official bank calculators and chartered accountant computations before going live.

Education with every calculation: A number without context is just a number. Every Calcota calculator shows the formula used, explains each variable, and provides a detailed breakdown — so you learn the math behind your money, not just the final answer.

Privacy without compromise: All calculations happen in your browser. We do not track what numbers you enter, we do not store your financial data, and we never will. There is no analytics on calculator inputs — your EMI amount and salary details are none of our business.

Free without tricks: No premium features hidden behind a paywall. No “create an account to see the amortization schedule” gimmicks. No email collection popups. Every feature of every calculator is available to every user, always.

The Team

Calcota is maintained by a small team of two developers and one finance professional based in India. We keep the team intentionally small so we can move quickly — when the government announces new tax slabs in the Union Budget, our Income Tax Calculator is updated the same evening, not three weeks later.
